Navajo Fry Bread Recipe

No, you are not confused, it is not Friday yet. ;) I just thought I'd give you a recipe on Monday this week. You'll still be getting the usual Food for Friday post on Friday. :D

The recipe is similar to the one my Mom used to make. It is fairly simple and it is good.

Here is what you'll need

1 cup unbleached flour
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon powdered milk
1/2 cup water
Vegetable oil for frying

Please note: We doubled the recipe so what we used was
2 C. flour
1/2 tsp. salt
2 tsp. baking powder
and instead of 1 tsp powdered milk and 1/2 cup of water. Catman used 1 cup of regular 1% milk

The recipe was then followed according to the directions below:

Sift together the flour, salt, powdered milk, and baking powder into a large bowl. Pour the water over the flour mixture all at once and stir the dough with a fork until it starts to form one big clump.

Flour your hands. Using your hands, begin to mix the dough, trying to get all the flour into the mixture to form a ball. NOTE: You want to mix this well, but you do NOT want to knead it. Kneading it will make for a heavy Fry Bread when cooked. The inside of the dough ball should still be sticky after it is formed, while the outside will be well floured.

Cut the dough into four (4) pieces.(since we doubled the recipe you will see (8) pieces below)

Using your floured hands, shape, stretch, pat, and form a disk of about 5 to 7 inches in diameter. NOTE: Don’t worry about it being round.

Heat the vegetable oil to about 350 degrees F. NOTE: You can check by either dropping a small piece of dough in the hot oil and seeing if it begins to fry, or by dipping the end of a wooden spoon in and seeing if that bubbles. Your oil should be about 1-inch deep in a large cast-iron skillet or other large fryer.

Take the formed dough and gently place it into the oil, being careful not to splatter the hot oil. Press down on the dough as it fries so the top is submersed into the hot oil.

Fry until brown, and then flip to fry the other side. Each side will take about 3 to 4 minutes.

Indian Fry Bread can be kept warm in a 200 degree F. oven for up to 1 hour. They refrigerate well and can be reheated in a 350 degree F. oven for 10 to 15 minutes before serving.

Fry bread can be served as a dessert, by drizzling with honey and sprinkling with powdered sugar or topping with fruit. It can also be used as a main dish bread.

Below is how I chose to top mine, since it was kind of a brunch. I topped it with sour cream and a little salsa. If it would have been for dinner, I would have gone the Indian Taco route. I would have used ground beef, shredded cheese, lettuce, tomatoes and whatever else I wanted to top it with.

I remember watching the Tammy movies when I was growing up.
I've probably seen all three of the movies at least four times. (I never watched the TV series)

My Dad used to laugh at me because if there was a Tammy movie on, I was glued to the TV. He and my Mom could never figure out why I liked all the older movies. I still think they thought I was crazy since half of the stuff I used to watch on Saturday and Sunday afternoons was made before I was even born. Shoot, half the stuff I used to watch was made before my Dad was born. LOL!

I'm going to have to say though, there was/is just something about the Tammy movies that I really like. For some reason, I can identify with the Tammy character. I tend to see a lot of me in her. Even when I was a little girl, I noticed the similarities between the character and myself. I actually think it's kind of strange that I can identify so closely with Tambrey Tyree.

Well anyway, my all time favorite is still the first film, "Tammy and the Bachelor" from 1957, with Debbie Reynolds and Leslie Nielson.

For your enjoyment today, first I have posted a clip from the movie with Debbie Reynolds singing Tammy. I love this song, I've seen the movies so many times, I know it practically by heart.

Next up is the first scene from the movie followed by the second scene.

I only posted the first two parts because there are eleven clips in total and that would have made for one really, really long post. I've tried to find the full length movie online, but it doesn't seem to be available for viewing. :( If you want to see the full length movie, it'll have to be done clip by clip on YouTube. I left the related videos function open on all the clips posted today, so it should be easy enough to find. :) or the movies can be rented from Netflix.
